A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the coast of Mindanao in the Philippines, causing major destruction across several regions. According to disaster management authorities, at least 47 people have died, 31 remain missing, and more than 688 people have been injured.
The earthquake has affected over 346,000 people, while more than 75,000 families have suffered losses. Around 45,000 residents were forced to leave their homes and move to safer locations. More than 12,600 houses have been damaged.
Authorities reported dozens of landslides and damage to roads, bridges, an airport, and two seaports, making rescue and relief operations difficult. The disaster has also severely impacted agriculture, livestock, and fishing industries. Power outages were reported in 48 cities and municipalities.
General Santos City was among the worst-hit areas, with several buildings damaged, including a two-story school building that collapsed. Rescue teams continue searching for possible survivors. Officials have warned that the death toll may rise as emergency operations continue.
