Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra of the Supreme Court has recused himself from hearing actress Jacqueline Fernandez’s petition in the high-profile ₹200 crore money laundering and extortion case. The judge stated that he could not hear the matter because his son is a lawyer in a related case connected to the investigation.
The case will now be assigned to a new bench. The Supreme Court has listed the matter for June 24, when a fresh bench will decide the future course of proceedings.
Jacqueline Fernandez has challenged a May 30 order of Delhi’s Patiala House Court, which directed the framing of charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against her, Sukesh Chandrasekhar, his wife Leena Paul, and several other accused.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleges that Sukesh Chandrasekhar extorted around ₹200 crore from a businessman's wife and used the proceeds to provide expensive gifts and financial benefits to various individuals. According to the agency, Jacqueline received luxury gifts worth crores of rupees. The actress has consistently denied all allegations.
