Twist in US-Iran Deal as Tehran Demands Israeli Withdrawal from Lebanon

A new point of contention has emerged over the proposed peace agreement between the United States and Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Tuesday that the war cannot be considered fully over unless Israeli forces withdraw from areas of southern Lebanon captured during the conflict.

Speaking to foreign diplomats in remarks broadcast on Iranian state television, Araghchi stated that Israel's continued presence in southern Lebanon would constitute a violation of the Memorandum of Understanding reached between Washington and Tehran.

He emphasized that any further Israeli military action in Lebanon would also be viewed as a breach of the agreement. However, US officials have not publicly confirmed whether Lebanon was included in the final framework of the deal.

Israel, meanwhile, has distanced itself from the reported agreement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the arrangement was a decision made by Washington and stressed that Israel would maintain its presence in the Lebanese buffer zone as long as necessary for security reasons.

The conflicting statements have raised doubts about key unresolved elements of the agreement ahead of the planned formal signing ceremony in Geneva. Analysts believe the differing interpretations could complicate efforts to secure a lasting peace in the region.
