Football Unites Iranians as Team Melli Draws with New Zealand at World Cup

Los Angeles: Politics briefly took a back seat as thousands of Iranian fans rallied behind their national football team during Iran’s World Cup opener against New Zealand in Los Angeles. Despite deep political divisions among supporters, Team Melli's goals sparked celebrations across the stadium as the match ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Iranian fans arrived carrying different symbols representing opposing political views. Some waved the official flag of the Islamic Republic, while others displayed the pre-1979 lion-and-sun flag commonly associated with opposition groups. However, once the match began, supporters largely united behind the team, chanting “Iran, Iran” throughout the game.

Small Protest Held Outside Stadium

A small group of demonstrators gathered outside the venue carrying Israeli flags and expressing support for opposition figure Reza Pahlavi. Protesters also called on US President Donald Trump to resume pressure on Tehran and accused the national team of representing the Iranian establishment.

One banner described the squad as the “IRGC Team,” referring to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Despite the strong political messaging, the demonstration remained limited in size and did not affect the atmosphere inside the stadium.

Political Messages Visible in Stands

Although FIFA prohibits political symbols at international matches, many fans entered the stadium with lion-and-sun flags, shirts and hats. Others wore slogans such as “Free Iran” and “Make Iran Great Again.”

Several supporters also highlighted the humanitarian impact of the recent conflict involving Iran. One fan wore a shirt reading “MINAB 168,” referring to children reportedly killed during the first day of the war. During the match, a group of supporters unveiled a “MINAB 168” message inside the stadium.

Football Overshadows Political Divisions

The match began with some spectators booing Iran’s national anthem, reflecting ongoing political tensions among sections of the Iranian diaspora. Palestinian and Israeli flags were also visible in the crowd.

Despite those differences, football ultimately became the main focus. Iran fought back twice after falling behind and earned a 2-2 draw against New Zealand. Every Iranian goal was met with loud celebrations from fans across the stadium, regardless of their political views.

For one evening in Los Angeles, football managed to unite supporters who remain divided on many other issues.
