Former Kathmandu Official Arrested in Connection With Gen Z Protest Crackdown
Former Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, Chhabi Rijal, was arrested on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in the violent suppression
of the Gen Z protest movement in September last year.

According to Nepal Police, Rijal was detained from his residence in Subidhanagar, Kathmandu.
He is among several high-ranking officials accused of playing a role in the crackdown, which resulted in the deaths of 76 people during the youth-led demonstrations.

The development follows the recent arrests of former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
A government-appointed probe commission had recommended legal action against them and other officials on criminal charges linked to the incident.

Meanwhile, Nepal’s Supreme Court has refused to grant interim relief to Oli amid ongoing protests over his detention.
Hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by his wife, Radhika Shakya, Justice Meghraj Pokharel declined to order his release.

Oli and Lekhak were earlier sent to judicial custody for five days by the Kathmandu District Court on March 29, 2026.

The arrests come after the newly formed government led by Balendra Shah approved the probe commission’s findings in its first Cabinet meeting.
The Gen Z protests, driven by public anger over corruption, nepotism, and a proposed social media ban, had ultimately led to Oli’s removal from office.

The case continues to intensify political unrest in Nepal, as authorities move forward with legal action against those accused in the crackdown.
